WhatsApp Business is free, you only pay once you add marketing and a team
The WhatsApp Business app is free. Since September there is a subscription on top, and since October replies on the Business Platform cost money too. In five charts, I show what WhatsApp Business really costs and how it differs from personal WhatsApp.
In the German skilled trades, 62% of businesses use messengers such as WhatsApp, according to the digital association Bitkom, often on a personal phone. So the question of what WhatsApp Business costs has a short and a long answer. The short one: the app costs nothing. The long one changed twice in autumn 2026.
Since 15 September, Meta has been selling a subscription for the Business app. Since 1 October, replies on the Business Platform that used to be free cost money too. Here is the overview, with all prices from Meta’s own rate card for Germany.
The difference between WhatsApp Business and personal WhatsApp lies in the tools
Technically, you can message customers from your personal WhatsApp. Meta itself calls this limiting: a personal account lacks a business profile, a catalogue and automated messages. And business and private life blur on one device.
For businesses, there are two versions. The Business app is made for small businesses: one number, a few devices, greeting and away messages. The Business Platform is an interface that lets many team members reply at once and sends enquiries straight into the CRM.

The Business app stays free, the Meta One subscription is optional
On 15 September 2026, Meta launched Meta One, a subscription for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. For businesses, there are four tiers from 14.99 to 499 US dollars a month, per WhatsApp Business number. Meta hasn’t published euro prices yet.
In return, you get a verified badge, more replies from the AI assistant Meta Business Agent and, from the second tier, credits for messages to many contacts. According to Meta, messaging, the profile and the core tools of the app stay free.

For most small businesses, the subscription isn’t a must. It becomes interesting if someone pretends to be your business or you use the AI assistant a lot.
On the Business Platform, replies have cost money since October
On the platform, Meta has charged per delivered message since July 2025. Whatever your customers send stays free. New since 1 October 2026: only the first 1,000 of your replies within 24 hours each month are free, after that each one costs 4.56 cents. Confirmations you send within this window now cost 4.56 cents as well.

What stays free is everything within up to seven days after a click on a WhatsApp ad. If someone messages you from an ad on Facebook or Instagram, Meta doesn’t charge for messages during that time, only for replies from the AI assistant.
Meta is earning more and more from this business. Other revenue of its Family of Apps, mainly paid WhatsApp messaging and subscriptions according to Meta, rose by 59% to 1.1 billion US dollars in the third quarter of 2026.

What WhatsApp Business costs per month depends on your marketing messages
For a sample calculation, I used Meta’s list prices for Germany. A business with 150 enquiries a month, three replies per enquiry and one appointment reminder pays Meta just under 7 euros. With 500 enquiries, it’s just under 46 euros.
It only gets expensive with marketing. A single offer to 1,000 contacts costs 113 euros, more than all replies and reminders combined. Germany is one of the most expensive markets: a marketing message costs 11.31 cents here, 7.12 cents in France and 2.07 cents in North America.

Don’t count on volume discounts. In Germany, Meta only lowers the price of confirmations from 100,000 messages a month, so small businesses practically never get there. On top of that come the fees of the service provider that runs the platform for you. They vary by provider and aren’t included in the calculation.
How to work out your own costs
- Separate business and private. Use a separate number in the Business app for your business instead of your personal WhatsApp. It costs nothing and looks more professional right away.
- Stick with the app as long as one person replies. You only need Meta One for the badge, more AI replies or messages to many contacts.
- Switch to the platform when a team replies. Then the 1,000 free replies per number count. Do the maths with your own number of enquiries.
- Plan marketing messages deliberately. They are the biggest cost block and require explicit consent.
- Use the free window after ads. People who message you from a WhatsApp ad open up to seven days in which Meta doesn’t charge for your messages.
How to build WhatsApp into your customer contact with data privacy in mind is covered in the article on WhatsApp Business for customer contact. I connect WhatsApp to a CRM in which every enquiry has a status, and to ads that lead straight into the chat. If you want to know which setup pays off for you, write to me.
